Maintenance
Water supplies for fire protection, including hydrants, shall be maintained so as to be capable of providing the flow and pressure of water for which they were designed.
Valve Inspections
Valves controlling water supplies to fire protection systems shall be inspected not greater than seven (7) days to ensure that they are wide open and are sealed or locked in that position.
FIRE PUMPS
Fire Pump Testing
Fire pumps shall be operated at intervals not greater than seven (7) days at their rated speeds until the satisfactory performance of the pump, driver and controller is verified.
Annual Tests - Refer to Sec. 8.3.3 of NFPA 25, 2002 Edition.
Records
Records shall be kept of all fire pump tests , and such records shall be retained for examination by the authority having jurisdiction, in conformance with NFPA 25, 2002 Edition, Section 4.3.
HYDRANTS
Maintenance
Hydrants shall be maintained in operating condition.
Hydrants shall be kept clear of obstructions and readily accessible for fire fighting use and their locations shall be clearly identified.
Inspection Frequency
Hydrants shall be inspected at intervals not greater than six (6) months and after each use.
Records
Records of inspections and tests shall be retained for examination by the authority having jurisdiction.
Inspections and Repairs
Hydrants shall be inspected to ensure that hydrant caps are in place and caps with worn, rusted or obstructed threads, which might hamper easy removal, shall be repaired or replaced.
Hydrant barrels shall be inspected to determine if water has accumulated as a result of a leaking main valve or a plugged or damaged drain valve.
Main valves which are leaking and drain valves which are plugged or damaged shall be repaired.
Annual Flushing
Hydrants shall be flushed at intervals not greater than twelve (12) months with the main valve and any outlet valves fully opened until the water runs clear.
NOTE:
- Fire code regulations require that records be retained a for a minimum of two (2) years.
- Tests are not required at the time of the annual inspections.
- Records required of annual inspection by qualified personnel.
The owner or occupier of property that has a private hydrant shall ensure that the hydrant is maintained in good working condition at all times and that inspection, servicing and testing of the hydrant is carried out by persons qualified to perform these services.
The owner of a private hydrant shall:
- not less than twice each year have the private hydrant flushed, drained and all threads and outlets and caps greased with waterproof grease;
- not less than once each year have all components of the private hydrant inspected, serviced and tested;
- on or before the 31st day of October each year provide the Fire Chief with a written report of the inspection, servicing and testing performed on the private hydrant during the previous twelve months;
- keep the ground surface around the private hydrant clear of shrubs, trees, structures and other obstructions of any kind, in order to facilitate use of the hydrant by the Department.
