Storage of Combustible Pallets

NFPA 13 (1999) Edition, Section 7-5 and B.C. Fire Code 2006 Edition, Section 3.2.2.4.

Non-Sprinklered Building

Absolutely no idle combustible pallets shall be stored on racks.
B.C. Fire Code (2006) Edition, Section 3.2.2.4, Sentence 2. Maximum height of storage is not more than 1.2 m (4 feet), and the width of an individual storage area is not more than 7.5 m (25 feet), and the aggregate area of storage is not more than:
  1. 100 m squared for wood or solid deck non-expanded polyethylene pallets, or
  2. 50 m squared for plastic pallets not designated in Subclause (a.)


Sprinklered Building

No idle combustible pallet shall be stored on racks unless the sprinkler system is specifically designed for that purpose.
NFPA 13 (1999) Edition. Specially designated area by fire protection engineer is required for combustible pallet storage in sprinklered building unless the following conditions are complied with:
  1. Pallets shall be stored no higher than 1.8 m (6 feet).
  2. Each pallet pile of no more than 4 stack shall be separated from other pallet piles by at least 1.4 m (8 feet) of clear space of 7.6 m (25 feet) of commodity.
