The City of Burnaby requires plans for every installation to be submitted to the Burnaby Fire Department for approval. An electrical permit is mandatory and inspections will be conducted by the Burnaby Electrical Department for approval and finalization of these installations. Verification certificates must be provided for all upgraded fire alarm systems.
Requirements for the Fire Alarm Upgrade program are as follows:
- An electrically supervised fire alarm system.
- An annunciator, where required, or a visible or audible trouble signal device at the main entrance.
- When activated, the building's sprinkler system must initiate an alarm on the fire alarm system where applicable.
- All storage and service rooms, and the top of elevator shafts where applicable, are to be provided with a heat detector.
- Smoke detection must be installed in the interior corridors and every exit stair shaft.
- Heat detectors must be installed in every suite that is connected to the building's fire alarm system.
- Provide a local, hardwired A/C smoke alarm, without a switch, in each suite.
- Ensure all fire alarm pull stations and fire alarm bells are compatible with the electrically supervised fire alarm system.
- Provide a Fire Safety Plan.
- Heat detectors are required in parking areas which are under part or all of the building if the parkade is not sprinklered.
