Home Safety

Smoke Alarms!
  • A working smoke alarm will eliminate your risk of dying in a fire by half.
  • Have a smoke alarm on each level of your home and outside the sleeping areas. For maximum protection, install a smoke alarm in every bedroom.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly and change the battery every year in battery operated alarms.

Everyone Needs A Home Fire Escape Plan!
  • Plan your escape with everyone in the family.
  • Make sure there are two ways out of every room.
  • If you live in an apartment, don't use the elevator!
  • Choose a meeting place outside where everyone will go once they have left the building.
  • Once you're out, STAY OUT! When everyone is safely out, go to a neighbor's house and call the fire department. ESCAPE FIRST, THEN CALL!

    Smokers Safety
  • Use large, deep, non-tip ashtrays and soak with water before discarding.
  • Never smoke in bed or while under the influence of medications or alcohol.

    Kitchen Safety
  • Never leave cooking unattended. Set a timer to remind you to turn off burners and the oven.
  • Wear tight-fitting or rolled up sleeves while you cook.
  • Turn pot handles inward on the stove where you can't bump them and children can't reach.
  • Keep the stove surface free of grease and clutter.
  • If a grease fire occurs use oven mitts and carefully slide a lid or a cookie sheet over the pan and turn off the burner.
  • Keep children and activity away from the stove whether it is on or off.
  • Don't hide the "goodies" above the stove area. Children have a way of knowing where they are and attempting to sneak a treat!
